Ben Kweller
Children are often raised in musical families, but few receive the same introduction to music as singer/songwriter Ben Kweller. Before he was old enough to enter kindergarten, a young Kweller emulated Nils Lofgren (who, during his time with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, would hang out with Kweller's father) by playing his toy version of the guitar. He also played piano, and by the age of eight, Kweller had begun penning his own songs. The following year, he received a nod of encouragement from Billboard magazine when it conferred an honorable mention ...[more]

The young upstart's highly anticipated second album! One of the main differences between "On My Way" and Kweller's first album, "Sha Sha," is the distinctly live feel of the new record. Produced by Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon, Ryan Adams), the motto put forward from the beginning of the session was "performance first." With that in mind, Kweller and his bandmates recorded with all instruments together in one room and minimal separation between amplifiers and drums. The result is a brilliantly raw, li [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Comes with a CD version of the full album! ATO Records is excited to announce the release of Ben Kweller's new record Changing Horses. The title is meaningful as it represents a sea change for the 27-year-old Texan-bred musician. Beginning with his first record Sha Sha, released in 2002, Kweller's albums have always been stylistically restless, moving from indie rock to ballads to anti-folk to melodic chug rock, often from song to song. Changing Horses, on the other hand, [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Ben gets his deep Texas roots on with this one. The limited edition of 2500 45 rpm record includes the single "Sawdust Man" and a brand new song "Send Me Down the Road" that is an exclusive B side and unavailable elsewhere. This is some stone cold country rock, my friends. Dig out yer dad's fringed leather jacket and catch the groove. Think old school Leon Russell at a summer festival gig in '71. Think Gram Parsons blowing a bunch of rednecks' minds with his high lonesome soul.

On his third, self-titled effort, Ben Kweller takes the notion of "solo album" to the extreme, playing all of the instruments himself. For many artists, this would result in an album that's quiet and insular. However, Ben Kweller is nearly as immediate and direct as Sha Sha and On My Way were, but with a little more focus. Kweller's eternally boyish voice is perfectly suited to his tales of young love, hanging out and heartache, whether he frames them in giddy, impatient pop like "Run," [ read more ]

Enthusiasm is what singer/songwriter Ben Kweller brings to his work. Ramones-like perennial goofy-teenager attitude and lack of antipathy are his golden attributes, and the combination of his keen songwriting sense makes Kweller a pop powerhouse. Following his self-released demo, Freak Out It's Ben Kweller, and the following EP, Kweller spreads out with more pop songs and sounds on this full-length studio album. Underscoring the songwriting skill he's been working at since age eight, [ read more ]

A smaller, simpler affair than his breakout album, Sha Sha, Ben Kweller's On My Way strips away the polished alt-rock production and emphasizes the singer/songwriter side of his music. There's nothing here as immediately infectious as the Sha Sha singles "Wasted and Ready" and "Commerce TX" were, and overall it's a more subdued album. However, this somewhat more mature approach is contrasted and balanced by Kweller's voice, which still sounds charmingly, vulnerably adolescent as h [ read more ]
