The Rapture

The Rapture was formed in early 1998 by drummer Vito Roccoforte and guitarist/vocalist Luke Jenner. The whimsical indie group had extensive touring behind them by the time they recorded 1999's Mirror for Gravity. More touring ensued -- with the likes of Sunny Day Real Estate and Nuzzle -- and the band eventually relocated to New York City. They lost their original bassist and found a new one in Matt Safer, who had recently moved from Washington, D.C. After some more touring, the band recorded the six-song Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks EP and had ...[more]

This album is positively monumental. At one moment you are in a punk-rock house party in Brooklyn and then you are transported to a Berlin nightclub at 3am and then you wake up with a hangover on a Sunday morning as sunlight hits your face. The DFA-supplied beats are perfect, the tinny Gang-of-Rapture guitar is artful, and the basslines are incessant. But what really makes this album important, and more than just a Williamsburg art-rock document, are the slower tracks. There's a lovely power-pop song that i   [ read more ]

Pieces of the People We Love was written over the course of 12 months after the band had finished touring their debut. Knuckling down to writing duties upon their return to New York, the group emerged in a confident stride with 30 songs in their pocket and an itch to get into the studio. They road-tested some of their new tunes in a series of low-key live shows up and down the east and west coasts. The results were suitably exciting (the NYC show was voted Gig of the Year by New York Magazine), so   [ read more ]

The Rapture formed in the spring of '98. With a keen ear toward visionaries such as PIL, Television, Chrome, and the Happy Mondays, they've formed a reputation for energetic, chaotic live sets of sonic deathfuck groove. They combine all that's great about English and American post-punk. The dubby bass and propagandistic bellow of Gang of Four, the angular guitar of Richard Lloyd, the slack-jawed ramblings of Mark E. Smith -- these guys have got it all.

The Rapture's Mirror recalls the icy experimentalism of post-punk groups like Suicide, the Cure, Joy Division, and Public Image Ltd, as well as the more extended song structures of the latter band and Television. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
