From his earliest days as a member of the legendary Clean onward, singer/songwriter David Kilgour stood among the most important figures on the New Zealand pop landscape. A native of Dunedin, Kilgour first emerged in 1979 as the guitarist of the Clean, the highly influential trio he co-founded with his drummer brother Hamish; when the group disbanded three years later, the brothers reunited in the Great Unwashed, which proved even shorter-lived. New Zealand pop favorite David Kilgour returns with a brand new album that perfectly catches the spirit of the waning days of summer. Beginning in the late seventies with The Clean, Kilgour has continued to deliver three-minute bursts of New Zealand pop genius. Joined by members of Lambchop, Kilgour delivers eleven excellent songs that run from the opening sea-shanty "The Waltz" through to the pastoral, ocean washes of "Rolling."

More than 25 years later, Kilgour still loves music but loves life more, which is why he's still making records that are monuments to good old-fashioned song craft. This is his third record for Merge and sixth solo affair. David Kilgour's sixth solo album, The Far Now, is predictable in the best way possible. He's been delivering nothing but first-rate music for almost 30 years with the Clean and on his own, and this is no exception. With his backing band, the Heavy Eights, Kilgour lays down about as tuneful and atmospheric a set of indie rock as you'll find anywhere. Most of the album sticks to Kilgour's strengths, namely chiming indie rock that alternately chugs along in classic New Zealand fashion (   [ read more ]
