Growing up in Caracas, Venezuela, and Los Angeles, Devendra Banhart was always playing music and drawing. But it wasn't until his brief stay at the San Francisco Art Institute that the disciplines became his constant companions. With the encouragement of poet and SFAI professor Bill Berskon, Banhart began experimenting with all kinds of art. He also began recording songs around that same time, usually on shoddy, hand-me-down four-track machines. Brief, half-finished, or written in stream-of-consciousness form, the recordings weren't initially intended for release. But fr...[more]

#35 Seller of 2005! Singer/songwriter Devendra Banhart presents his fourth album, the 23-track Cripple Crow, and first for XL Recordings in North America. The artist rose to indie rock prominence via several releases for New York-based Young God Recordings since 2002, particularly last year's Rejoicing in the Hands. Cripple Crow blends Banhart's familiar acoustic side with a broader range of instrumentation on such tracks as "Long Haired Child" and "When They Come." Three ballads, "Sant   [ read more ]

Rejoicing In The Hands is the first of two Devendra Banhart albums to be released this year on Young God Records. (The second album, Nino Rojo, will be released in late September '04.) Devendra recorded these 32 songs in a living room, using the best possible vintage gear, in a house on the Alabama/Georgia border. With only a few mics capturing the scene, you get Banhart's stripped-down, beautiful warble (along with the occasional chorus of cicadas, when he recorded at night, with the windows    [ read more ]

Nino Rojo, the second half of the recording session that brought us Rejoicing in the Hands. Banhart's unique voice (think Marc Bolan doing stream-of-consciousness folk), lyrical vision, and prolific nature is sure to establish him as the most important new folk artist of this millennium. His lyrics are both the product of an experienced, vigilant city dweller, and a rural Appalachian hermit.

"To say Devendra is unique is an absurd understatement. When I first heard his voice I could not believe it. His occasionally warbling falsetto is alternately bizarre, soulful, comical, gentle, and often a little frightening (listen to 'Nice People' and see if it doesn't set the hairs on the back of your neck on end). His advanced (though often somewhat elliptical!) finger-picking guitar style, coupled with his wildly surreal lyrics (truly exceptional in many cases) have convinced me personally that he's a    [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Recorded in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica mountains. Neil Young lived there while recording After The Gold Rush and the area has also been home to Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Joni Mitchell, Mick Fleetwood, and members of The Doors. Those ghosts inhabit the sound and vibe of these recording sessions. Banhart's whole "freak folk" tag is gone, replaced with this classic, gorgeous rock album. Some songs are fragile and solipsistic, others have a pronounced tropicalia influence, and stil   [ read more ]

With a gratifying amount of interest surrounding Devendra Banhart's debut album, "Oh Me Oh My the Way the Day Goes By the Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs of the Christmas Spirit," Young God has harvested six NEW tracks from the floating and constantly replenished pool of songs at Banhart's disposal (about 100 from which to choose at any given moment), and complemented them with two favorites from "Oh Me Oh My..." ("Charles C. Leary" and "Cosmos and Demos").
