Aphex Twin
Exploring the experimental possibilities inherent in acid and ambience, the two major influences on home-listening techno during the late '80s, Richard D. James' recordings as Aphex Twin brought him more critical praise than any other electronic artist during the 1990s. Though his first major single, "Didgeridoo," was a piece of acid thrash designed to tire dancers during his DJ sets, ambient stylists and critics later took him under their wing for Selected Ambient Works 85-92, a sublime touchstone in the field of ambient techno. James' reaction to t...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. UK-only vinyl version. Three track EP, including the title track, most famously documented on video by Chris Cunningham. Track two (that %$^%$#^ equation) completely rules, as does "Nannou," for completely different reasons each, of course. Fuck the cult of personality, all that tank/bank/invention mess. The guy makes stellar tracks, keeps technologically informed, has keen melodic sensibilities, and uses great sounds. Closest we'll have to perfection for a long time.

Before Aphex Twin, remixes were simply dancefloor fodder and singles filler, hired out and produced, with an eye to crossover success in different markets with what was essentially the same piece of music. After Aphex Twin, though, dozens of electronic and experimental outfits considered entire remix albums de rigueur. A remix, for the notorious recluse Richard D. James, was simply another way to release his music, and, as the title of this remix collection indicates, earn some money off the backs of cluele [ read more ]

A compendium of sorts for the mighty Aphrodite, aka Gavin King, whose various ragga and jump-up tracks have scaled the high points of most jungle DJs' sets at one point or another throughout the mid-'90s. Aphrodite Recordings gives a sense of the largeness, although, as usual with jump-up, these tracks don't sound nearly as interesting outside of a club. Anthems such as "King of the Beats," "Woman That Rolls," "Style from the Darkside," and "Spice," as well as a few lesser-rinsed (occasion [ read more ]

Analogue Bubblebath is a relatively weak creation from Richard D. James, operating here under his AFX alias. With two songs reminiscent of his Caustic Window style and two songs leaning toward traditional dance fodder, there's not much variation on display. The title song is sprightly and light with bubbly sound effects and ambient beeps that suggest the tune was recorded in a lost underwater city. It's a nice arrangement with a driving Kraftwerk feel. Despite threatening retirement several times, in 2001 Richard D. James finally released another Aphex Twin record. But for all this record tells listeners, he may still be in retirement. Spreading 30 tracks (most with unpronounceable titles) across two discs, Drukqs sounds less like a major new statement from electronica's best producer than the results of a Sunday afternoon's trawl through his hard drive for files he hasn't released before. Many songs here evoke the feel of recordings lo [ read more ]

James' most consistent work, I Care Because You Do fuses his earlier hardcore techno days with the smooth rhythm and atmosphere of his ambient work, often on the same song. "Ventolin" is one of the harshest singles ever recorded; the orchestrated closer "Next Heap With" is the highlight of the album. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is a desperately sparse album: thin percussion and several haunted-synth lines are the only components on most songs, and Richard D. James added only one vocal sample on the entire album ("We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams"). Also, the sound quality is relatively poor; it was recorded direct to cassette tape and reportedly suffered a mangling job by a cat. All this belies the status of Selected Ambient Works 85-92 as a watershed of ambient music [ read more ]

Come to Daddy has been interpreted by some as Richard D. James' sly send-up of the Prodigy's massive hit "Firestarter." If that's the case, it only goes to show how clever the Aphex Twin really is. Built around an intense drum loop and a deliriously demented, booming voice yelling "Come to Daddy!," the track could be the biggest sonic assault James has ever constructed, and even with the underlying menace, it remains one of his most accessible and memorable songs. The EP is filled out with [ read more ]

Perhaps inspired by the experimental drum'n'bass being created by Squarepusher (a recent signee to his Rephlex label), Richard D. James' third major-label album as Aphex Twin was his first to work with jungle -- though, to his credit, he had released the breakbeat EP Hangable Auto Bulb almost a year earlier. Contemporaries Orbital and Underworld were beginning to incorporate moderate use of drum'n'bass in their work as well, but this album was more extreme than virtually all jungle bein [ read more ]

Four months after Warp released the 11th Analord volume, the label combined the two Hangable Auto Bulb singles from 1995 and issued the result as this convenient disc, a way to signify the tenth anniversary of the original vinyl releases. A lot of IDM analysts point to these tracks as drill'n'bass at its most innovative and best, and it would be difficult to devise a convincing opposing argument, unless it's possible to make early Squarepusher releases seem as if they're untethered and [ read more ]
