Trail of Memories: The Randy Travis Anthology is a welcome, needed addition to his catalog. Although he's had hits collections before, nothing has come close to offering as much music as this two-disc, 44-track collection, nor has anything else made as strong a case for his musical accomplishments -- in this light, he truly sounds like the heir to such classic country singles as Merle Haggard, Lefty Frizzell, and George Jones. 'Reflecting the same '60s {hard rock} and '70s punk of MC5 and the Clash, this effort features rare and previously unreleased tracks. The opening Cheater sounds like an impressionable Hives with a great amount of intensity and verve. A manic I Don't Wanna Work comes off in the vein of an early Radio Birdman. Packing an ample amount of punk guitar, the songs are hard-rockers but also will reduce the listener to singing along with each chorus.
