Picaresque (CD)
#13 Seller of 2005! In the past two years, The Decemberists have gone from unknowns outside their native Portland to success via critical praise, impressive sales, and packed houses. Produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie) in a Portland church that was also being used as a daycare center, with Picaresque The Decemberists have recorded their fullest sounding release yet, all ambitions fulfilled. The Quintet blazes through more instrumental variations than can be listed here, for a heightened urgency and depth to the sharply written lyrical scenarios.![]()

| This is my favorite album of all time. To me Colin Meloy is a genius. He is my favorite song writer and this whole album is a masterpiece. Picaresque is truly unbelievable from the beginning to the end. The thing that makes the Decemberists so great is there is not another band that sounds like them. Their sound is unique and original and just amazing. I would not be able to function if I did not have this cd. After hearing this album I bought every other Decemberists thing possible and just cant get enough. BEST ALBUM OF 2005 AND ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!! | |

| These are songs as short stories. These are popped out folk tales of murderous mariners, lovesick ghosts, a baby princess, a vixen spy, runaway prostitutes, and of course, the Academy Awards and George W. Bush. The tragicomic lyricism blends perfectly with the sturdy, earthy sonics, and this rapidly evolving group is digging in to the more theatrical and melodramatic aspects of pop music to absolutely glorious effect. They're the most courageously wimpy, the most challengingly accessible, the most literately basic, and the most absurdly serious band in the whole world! And Colin Meloy is a very Morrissey-esque frontman, and his wickedly wry humor and knack for pathetically polite pathos must make the Moz very proud, and insanely jealous. | |

| Amazing album from start to finish. From beautiful soft and slow songs to Upbeat and exhuberent tracks such as The Sporting Life / Sixteen Military Wifes. Picaresque is a MUST have in your Indie rock collection. | |

| I had never heard of these guys, but I saw them live at a music festival, and because of that show, they are one of my favorite bands. And Picaresque is just an amazing CD that showcases every aspect of the Decemberists that just makes them awesome. | |

| It's rare these days to find a group of artists who are as talented as The Decemberists. It is rarer still to find such a group who not only brings you wonderful music but moves beyond into the realm of storytelling and legend. Picaresque is a banquet of song and story, conjuring rich imagery in the mind to accompany the superb instrumentation and haunting, striking vocals. By far the best album I have heard in years. | |

| Unnesessarily good lyrics in a musical era where retching to a beat is acceptable. One of my favorite bands, an excellent and original cd. See them live. | |

| this is brilliance. Picaresque truly brings out the intensity of the lyricist that is Colin Meloy. The stories and scenarios that Picaresque will put you through are full of imagery and are completed with the aural serenity of the melodies of The Decemberists. Their best yet. Not recommended---rather A MUST HAVE! | |
