Four Parisian boys with brotherly love, set out for Berlin last summer, settling down at Planet Roc studios, in former East Germany, without a single song written but determined to write, record and produce their third album themselves with no outside participation and no compromises. It's Never Been Like That was conceived with a live mentality, in a straight line, summing up a lot of the band's emotions and past experiences, sometimes conflicting, often disrupting. All the songs are autobiographic and set down emotional equations where disillusion and exaltation try to find a common language. This is a romantic album although very rigorously made.

Rhythms are hard, arrangements straightforward, violently simple and close to the bone: 2 guitars, 1 bass, drums and a 4-month deadline. These ways of production are rare and belong to great albums.

If you liked Phoenix's last release, you will either love or hate this album. The biggest problem I had with "Alphabetical" was that at some points, things felt a bit overdone. That is not the case here, as most of the tracks have a deliberately loose feel. This album is a great change of pace from a band who cannot seem to write a bad pop tune.

Phoenix has always been one of those bands that are a bit of a guilty pleasure -- leaning very much towards the cheese of Top 40 pop but somehow still clever enough to interest even the most music savvy listener. This delicate balancing act between corporate radio trash and something actually worthwhile has always proved to be what made them an admirable band to take notice of. With album number three we then find these Parisians still carrying on in this risky tradition but this time from a completely different angle. It's Never Been Like That is the sound of a band reinventing itself and laying waste to their past. As a result, this album comes off much more like some pissed-up debut rather than a third album. After a gruelingly long tour in support of their last album, Alphabetical, Phoenix decided it best to immediately hole up to make an album where first takes were ideal and all that was necessary was 2 guitars, a bass and some drums. The outcome is a very straightforward and violently simple rock album where the Destiny Child beats and studio trickery of Alphabetical are but a memory. It's Never... is filled with a slew of sincere songs packed full of catchy hooks that could make even your shy kid brother take to the dance floor. Songs like ''Long Distance Call'' and ''Second to None'' are dangerously close to being the band's next ''Too Young'' (their cult hit featured in the film Lost in Translation) and are guaranteed to find a home on scores of summer mixtapes. The band has managed to release their first consistently good album, which can now let Phoenix fans hold their heads high.
