Antarctica is a multimedia project incorporating music, art and storytelling. As well as a rock album, Antarctica is a fully illustrated storybook. Inspired by the classic storybook records of childhood memory, the story of Antarctica follows the journey of a country boy on his way to the city, determined to return a nuclear bomb found in his back yard. Throughout the adventure, the evil witch and her minions of the city attempt to steal the bomb for their own destructive purposes. We see the classic conflict of good and evil, manifested by the conflict between color and darkness. One can experience the story by listening to the album, reading the book or even doing both simultaneously, as the book instructs the reader when to turn the page based on audio cues. However, each of the parts of the project can stand alone as a complete and separate work, and be appreciated without the other. All of the pictures in the 50 page book are original paintings by The Never's Noah Smith. The Never (Chapel Hill, NC) benefits from the collaboration of songwriters Ari Picker and Noah Smith, friends since childhood and bandmates since adolescence. The pair met while working on a final project for art school, so it seems fitting that they ended up working with not only music but visual art as well. Musically, Picker's penchant for the dramatic and classical and Smith's gift of classic pop melody join to create an album that tells a whole story while actually split up into separate and individual pop rock songs. The Brothers Tunnell (Jonny and Joah) lend their familial chemistry to the rhythm section as well as join in on the band's frequent four-part harmonies.
