For a few years running, Detroit dance phenom Jimmy Edgar has been topping tastemakers list as the new kid on the block to watch. After two eclectic electroid EPs for Warp, Jimmy drops his debut full-length and the dance heads are ready. Still marked by Edgar's insane programming skills and ultra-melodic synthesizer touches, the scalpel-sharp tunes on Color Strip are pure hip shakers. Like Timbaland producing Metro Area under the watchful eye of Carl Craig, these are dance tunes that you can hum as you gyrate. This time around vocals are added in perfect places, synth hooks are made mammoth and the result is that sex oozes from each sweaty track.

To say that Jimmy Edgar oozes of the signature Detroit sound would be an understatement - but it would be obviously pointless as well. In actuality, Edgar's sound at the start of Colorstrip is best described as a steroid-injected Justin Timberlake being gang raped by Autechre. Split-second spliced madness occurs in such tracks as ''Pret-a-porter'' (track 1) and the cleverly titled, ''I Wanna Be Your STD'' (track 3). While Colorstrip commences with suicidal frenzy, it temporarily mellows to a sexy lean with the moan-some downtempo of ''Lllb Detroit'' (track 4) only to return in true Detroit demeanor, choc full of electro melody reminiscent of Matthew Dear's most fruitful endeavors. Despite Colorstrip's wide ranged sound, the album merits a mere B based on the concept of context: It's great while watching the city lights blur over the hood of your car or while waxing a pair of white old school Adidas, but it's not necessarily for all occasions. Nevertheless, a great direction for the sometimes stagnant Warp label!
